There’s probably a ton of placebo effects here as the ritual of application is almost as good as the spray itself, but I’m all for sticking with whatever I find helpful – and it definitely does.
What are the best pillow mists to try?
These works are undoubtedly the king of this category and now offer all sorts of fog to either aid in drifting or to keep you calm all night. Over the years I’ve used most of these and looked through many bottles of the goodies, but This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray (£ 18.00) remains a firm favorite. A trio of lavender, vetiver and wild chamomile offers a wonderful scent that I breathe deeply and that I like to apply again night after night.
REN’s & Now to Sleep Pillow Spray (£ 18.00) combines frankincense, lavender, cedarwood, and ylang ylang for a richer, more immersive experience that definitely helps slow my mind down and put me in the mood for calm. Unexpected but not overwhelming, this doesn’t stay in the air if your partner isn’t as into pillow sprays as you are! While I don’t find this to have the staying power of This Works, it’s a beautiful pillow spray that definitely adds to the calming.
L’Occitane Aromachologie Relaxing Pillow Mist (£ 19.50) is also a beautiful spray that combines lavender, bergamot, tangerine, sweet orange, and geranium. The result is a spray that feels more like a perfume than a fabric scent! The citrus notes are subtle and more calming than energizing, which ensures this is a great addition to any bedside table.
If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, Feather & Down Sweet Dreams Pillow Spray (£ 5.60) is for you, yet still offers a great fragrance. This simplified combination of lavender and chamomile definitely feels heavier and “chunkier”. So use it sparingly – but it also does the job, helping relax the senses and help you fall asleep.
Pillow spray is always on my bedside table because it plays a fundamental role in my bedtime ritual. If I splash a little scent on my pillow, I can tell it’s time to relax as I take a deep breath and appreciate the aromas, which aids in the all-important shutdown process. I’ve been using them for so long that my mind is now associating those notes of lavender and chamomile with sleep. So it’s an immediate signal to slow down and snuggle under the covers.
