In general, the guideline for using body lotion is pretty straightforward. “I recommend applying body lotion daily,” says Wesley. “If you’ve showered recently, the best time to apply is within three to five minutes after a bath or shower to lock in moisture and restore the skin barrier that may have been broken by soap or detergent.”
While it seems easy, there are a few mistakes you can make with body lotion. Wesley sketched these three for me:
1. Not applying enough: Don’t be stingy with the stuff. Of course, you don’t have to empty the whole bottle on your body, you have to be generous with how much you put on.
2. Don’t use everything: One example Wesley gives is putting lotion on your torso but forgetting about your legs. Make sure to moisturize every inch of your body.
3. Applying a lotion that is not moisturizing enough: This can depend on your skin type or needs. Overall, you should choose a product that has the nutrients, vitamins, and ingredients that will keep your skin hydrated for a while. “I prefer body lotions that contain natural and less unnecessary ingredients,” says Wesley. “One that is creamier or has a lotion mixed with oil will often be more moisturizing than a thinner, more watery lotion that just tends to evaporate from the surface of the skin. Ingredients like shea butter, cold-pressed oils, borage seed oil, and / or fatty acids like Ceramides tend to have great barrier protection properties. “
